How many strands of DNA are in each cell?


The number of strands of DNA in each cell is highly dependent on several factors. Furthermore, it depends on what laymen commonly refer to as “strands." A strand implies the DNA primary sequence written such as “ATTATATCGCG” etc. The chemical structure of DNA is a double helix, which means that there are two “strands” of DNA for every molecule of DNA. Now we need to determine the number of DNA molecules, which can be defined as a chromosome. In a normal cell, a chromosome is a continuous DNA molecule. The problem now needs further information:

Every species on earth has its number of chromosomes, which can vary greatly. For example, a human has 46 whereas an Ophioglossum reticulatum (a fern) has 1,260 chromosomes.

Many times chromosome numbers are written in the context of how many genomes or unique chromosomes there are. For example, in a human one genome is 23 chromosomes (22 autosomes, 1 sex chromosome), which is duplicated. So commonly humans are defined as being diploid (2 copies of the genome), but again every species can have various copies of the whole genome. Generally speaking, normal mammals can only handle having 2 copies of the genome whereas plants can handle upwards of 100’s of copies of their genome.

Lastly, for various reasons cells can have issues with their DNA that can cause variations on what is previously mentioned. Furthermore, there can also be variants that could be defined as “normal” that cause alterations, plants being common in this area. A good example is cancerous cells in humans. One definition of cancer is the DNA maintenance system is in disarray. This means there can be additional copies of chromosomes, DNA breaks, and chromosome deletions that can all alter the bottom line of how many DNA strands exist. If you are considering a human, observe the following information: 23 chromosomes, 2 copies of the genome, 2 DNA strands per chromosome = 92 strands of DNA in a normal human cell.
