The Trump administration has this year floated the idea of trying to take back control of the Panama canal.  Given over to Panama in December, 1999, the U.S. has become increasingly concerned about China's presence and influence over operational control.  Even Panama now seems willing to work with the U.S. to ensure the canal remains open, free, and cost efficient.
